그 첫번째로

전시주제와 개요에 대한 내용이다.

The 14th International Architecture Exhibition took place from 7 June to 23 November 2014 at the Giardini and Arsenale venues, and in various other venues in Venice.

Fundamentals

 

Rem Koolhaas describes Fundamentals an exhibition that consists of three main components:
 

이전의 비엔날레는 각각 '국가 대표' 건축가, '스타 건축가', 세기의 '거장' 인 총 감독이 스스로 전시를 기획했다. 그래서 각 전시가 따로노는 형상이었다. 그러나 렘 쿨하스는 '모더니즘'이라는 단어를 금기어로 만들고 '펀더멘털'이란 주제 아래 세가지 전시를 통합했다.

 

세가지 전시 :: 에 대한 개념 정리

1. 모든 국가관에 공통된 주제를 내려 각 국가별로 다른 결과물 도출 (국가별 특색, 역사, 환경에 따라 다른 결과물이 나온다.)

2. 이탈리아의 현재를 말해주는 역사, 예술, 건축에 대한 전시 + 영화, 영극, 춤, 음악 비엔날레 동시 개최

3. 건축의 요소들, 즉 벽, 바닥, 천정과 같은 15가지 요소를 전시

For the first time, the national pavilions are invited to respond to a single theme…
65 countries – in the Giardini, at the Arsenale and elsewhere in the city – examine key moments from a century of modernization. Together, the presentations start to reveal how diverse material cultures and political environments transformed a generic modernity into a specific one. Participating countries show, each in their own way, a radical splintering of modernities in a century where the homogenizing process of globalization appeared to be the master narrative…

Also for the first time, Venice’s other biennales and festivals – Dance, Music, Theatre, Film – collaborate with architecture…
In a moment of crucial political change, we decided to look at Italy as a “fundamental” country, completely unique but also emblematic of a global situation where many countries are balancing between chaos and a realization of their full potential. The Arsenale presents a scan of Italy, established by 82 films, 41 architectural projects, and a merger of architecture with la biennale’s dance, music, theatre, and film sections. Each project in Monditalia concerns unique and specific conditions but together form a comprehensive portrait of the host country

중요한 정치적 변화의 순간에 우리는 "기본의" 국가로 선정한 이탈리아에서 찾기로 했다.

** 이탈리아로 선정한 이유: 혼란과 잠재력의 실현 사이에 많은 나라가 균형을 이루고 있는 국제적인 상황에서 세계화를 상징하지만 고유의 특징을 가지고 있는 나라이기 때문에.

Elements of Architecture / Central Pavilions
This exhibition is the result of a two-year research studio with the Harvard Graduate School of Design and collaborations with a host of experts from industry and academia…
Elements of Architecture looks under a microscope at the fundamentals of our buildings, used by any architect, anywhere, anytime: the floor, the wall, the ceiling, the roof, the door, the window, the façade, the balcony, the corridor, the fireplace, the toilet, the stair, the escalator, the elevator, the ramp. The exhibition is a selection of the most revealing, surprising, and unknown moments from a new book, Elements of Architecture, that reconstructs the global history of each element. It brings together ancient, past, current, and future versions of the elements in rooms that are each dedicated to a single element. To create diverse experiences, we have recreated a number of very different environments – archive, museum, factory, laboratory, mock-up, simulation…”

 

건축의 요소 (SPACE 7월호 기사 인용)

렘 쿨하스는 오늘의 건물 속에 간과된 '내장'을 탐구한다.

건축의 요소 전에 대해서 찬반이 엇갈린다. 이를 비판하는 사람들은 지금까지의 건축이 하나의 '언어'로 지난 백 년 동안 모더니즘이 생겨나면서 일종의 주도권을 가지고 건축 담론을 이어 나갔듯이, 마치 전 세계인이 영어를 배워야 하는 것처럼 하나의 문법으로 통일해야 한다는 것이다.

제도와 틀을 깨고 요소를 난잡하게 해서 새로운 현실을 창조하는 방법으로 전시.

기존 건축전은 결과만 보여줬다. 이는 이미 드러난 과거의 가치를 재현하는 데 그친다. 예를 들어 새로운 화장실의 한 유형을 보여주는 것보다 변기 수십가지를 통해 변기의 역사를 보여주는 것이 새로운 가치를 담는다.

네덜란드의 건축 역사가인 미셸 프로보스토드는 "렘은 다른 모든 건축가를 지우고 스스로 유일한 건축가가 됐다."고 비판했다. 그러나 우리는 단지 드러난 메시지를 파악하고 지표로 삼으면 된다.

우선 전시의 중요한 메시지는 질적으로 변한 건축 전시에 대한 활용이다. 렘에 의해 만들어진 새로운 기계의 메커니즘에 대한 인식을 공유하고, 새 가치를 만드는 방법은 무엇일까 고민해야 한다.

마지막 의미는 현시대 세계와 한국의 건축 이슈를 내부적인 시선과 외부적인 시선으로 들여다볼 수 있는 기회라는 점이다. 예를들어 건축의 사회적인 역활과 보존과 같은 근본적인 문제다. 한국은 짧은 근대화와 마구잡이 식 도시개발 논리로 도시 곳곳이 공사 중이다. 그리고 이를 철저히 돌아볼 기회도 가지지 못했다. 중세 시대의 박제로 정지된 베니스와는 정반대다.

베니스 리알토 다리 근처 오래된 팔라초 리노베이션 프로젝트를 맡은 렘은 2012년 젠크스 어워드를 통해 '보존은 근대화의 일부'라고 말했다.

근대 이후 역사적으로 보존해야 할 과거가 점점 더 현재와 가까워지고 있기 때문에 '보존'이 비단 과거의 문제일 뿐만 아니라 현재와 맞물리는 동시대 문제이고, 미래까지 준비하는 과제라는 주장이다. 이 메세지는 현재 대한민국 건축계에도 유효한 고민이다.
